Health, nutrition and care information specific to this breed
The Great Dane is the tallest dog breed in the world and one of the most recognisable. Males can stand over 80 cm at the shoulder and weigh up to 90 kg. Despite their imposing size, they are gentle, affectionate, and known as "the gentle giant" of the dog world. They are surprisingly good apartment dogs — they are calm indoors and do not require excessive exercise.
Great Danes have one of the shortest lifespans of any breed: 7–10 years, with many not reaching age 8 due to cardiac disease and bloat. Their short lifespan is directly attributable to the physiological demands of maintaining such an enormous body.
Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM)
DCM — where the heart muscle weakens and enlarges — is the leading cause of death in Great Danes. Studies suggest it affects up to 30% of Great Danes. Most dogs show no symptoms until late-stage disease. Annual echocardiograms are strongly recommended from age 3 onward. Holter monitoring detects arrhythmias before they become life-threatening.
Bloat (GDV) — Emergency Risk
Great Danes have the highest GDV risk of any breed. Lifetime risk estimates range from 36–42%. GDV kills within hours without emergency surgery. Prophylactic gastropexy (surgical stomach tacking) at time of neutering is strongly recommended and widely considered the standard of care for this breed. Learn the signs: distended abdomen, drooling, restlessness, unproductive retching.
Wobbler Syndrome
Cervical Spondylomyelopathy (Wobbler syndrome) causes progressive hind and forelimb weakness due to spinal cord compression in the neck. It affects an estimated 5% of Great Danes, typically in middle age. Weight management is critical — excess weight worsens neurological compression.
Common Health Conditions
Dilated cardiomyopathy (30% prevalence), GDV/bloat (highest risk of any breed, 36-42% lifetime risk), Wobbler syndrome, hip and elbow dysplasia, osteosarcoma, hypothyroidism.
Feeding & Nutrition
RER × 1.4–1.6 for adults. Three small meals daily as puppies, two as adults — never one large meal. From floor level, not raised bowls. Restrict exercise 2 hours post-meal. Large-breed specific puppy food to control growth rate and prevent developmental orthopaedic disease.
Exercise & Activity
Moderate: 30–60 minutes daily as adults. Over-exercising growing Great Danes causes permanent joint damage — restrict to 5 minutes per month of age until 18–24 months. Cardiac patients need vet-guided exercise restrictions.
